Weft-faced twill

A twill weave where weft yarns dominate the face—producing corded or ribbed effects—with warp largely hidden on the surface, used in some coatings and corded twill trouser cloth.

How to recognize it

Weft-faced twill shows weft cords or ribs dominating the face—warp less visible.

Warp-dominant steep ribs indicate warp-faced twill. Lengthwise wales without twill diagonal may be Bedford cord.

Origin and history

Twill weave references document weft-faced variants where weft floats dominate the surface.[1] Bedford cord diagrams illustrate weft-dominant rib structures on woven grounds.[2] Britannica groups weft-faced twill with corded trouser and coating cloth.[3]

Military greatcoats used weft-faced twill for wind resistance and ribbed hand.[1] Tailoring manuals contrast weft-faced cord with warp-faced gabardine.[1] Weft-faced twill differs from cut-pile corduroy.[2]

Today weft-faced twill appears in corded trousers, coatings, and upholstery in wool, cotton, and polyester.[1][2] Pair weft-faced cord pants with twill blazers.[2] When weft yarns dominate the face— weft-faced twill applies.[3]

Where it is used

Corded trousers, heavy coatings, upholstery, and ribbed suiting separates.[1]

What is worn now

Editorial styling suggestions from MsDressly—not strict rules.

Weft-faced cord adds texture—balance with smooth plain shirts.[2] Dark weft-faced twill reads winter coat.[1]

How it differs

Warp-faced twill shows warp on face. Balanced twill exposes both. Bedford cord has lengthwise wales.[1]

Expression and impression

Weft-faced twill reads corded, substantial, and winter-weight. Ribbed weft-faced reads military coat.
