Moleskin weave

A dense cotton fustian weave brushed or sheared to a short, suede-like nap—windproof workwear cloth distinct from knit moleskin or animal hide.

How to recognize it

Moleskin feels smooth and matte with very short pile; it lacks corduroy wales. The reverse is usually plain twill or plain without ribs.

Compare fustian if pile is longer or corded, or corduroy if cut wales are visible.

Origin and history

Moleskin names brushed cotton fustian finished to mimic mole fur—dense, windproof, and matte.[1] Encyclopaedia textile surveys group moleskin with napped cotton workwear alongside fustian ancestors.[3] Nineteenth-century hunters and laborers wore moleskin trousers in Europe and America.[1]

British and French mills brushed twill-backed fustian for field coats; moleskin became shorthand for tough cotton chore cloth.[1][3] Unlike corduroy, moleskin shears pile uniformly rather than in wales.[1] Post-war workwear brands revived moleskin for carpenter pants.[1]

Today moleskin appears in chore jackets, trousers, and linings in cotton and blends.[1][3] Pair moleskin with wool knits for autumn utility dressing.[1] When nap is short and even on woven cotton—not corduroy ribs—moleskin weave is the structure.[1]

Where it is used

Chore jackets, work trousers, hunting coats, linings, and casual autumn separates where wind resistance matters.[1]

What is worn now

Editorial styling suggestions from MsDressly—not strict rules.

Wear moleskin trousers with wool sweaters and boots; brush nap with the hand to even color.[1] Avoid expecting drape—moleskin is structured and matte.[3]

How it differs

Fustian is the napped cotton family. Corduroy shows cut wales. Velvet has longer silk pile.[1]

Expression and impression

Moleskin reads rugged, outdoorsy, and practical. Earth-tone moleskin reads heritage workwear.
